What are the general requirements for retirement?

Under the Federal Employees’ Retirement System (FERS), you must have at least five years of creditable civilian service to be eligible for an annuity and be covered by the retirement system on the day you leave your job. Your Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) is based on the year in which you were born. If, for example, you were born before 1948, your MRA is 55. If you were born after 1969, your MRA is 57. You can retire as early as your MRA with as little as 10 years of service.
